I know. I know. It has been nearly three months since my last post. Sorry.
I have an interesting topic to write on today... Privacy.
First of all, this is not a rant, nor is it an excuse. It will be an explanation and an examination. I will start out with a fact, followed by a story... and I hope you all see the irony. Fact: Tim and I are very, very private people. We prefer not to share much about our personal lives with people outside our families or our friends. We are more than happy to publicly obsess over Walt Disney World and our trips there, discuss books and film, fun restaurants and adventures we've experienced, but that is about as far as it goes. Our hopes, dreams, fears, frustrations, etc. our aspects of our life we prefer to share only with those close to us. Funny enough, our first date was to see a play at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier in Chicago, IL called Private Lives by Noel Coward. Great show, by the way - awfully funny.
This idiosyncrasy is why I find myself avoiding blogging. Each time I think, "Jenna, you should post something on the blog, its been awhile." All I can think is that I do not want to broadcast my life to the greater internet audience. Some parts, sure, but others... not so much. Then, I look at other blogs and on Facebook and see that others have no problem posting about the same topic that gave me pause. Am I the minority? Are there more people like Tim and I that maintain a "public life" and a "private life"? Probably.
There is nothing wrong with openly sharing on social media. All that matters is posting what you feel comfortable sharing with everyone you know (and strangers too depending on your privacy settings). In fact, sometimes I wish I was more comfortable with it - social media provides an excellent vehicle to voice opinions and to find others who are like minded, or even to find those who disagree and broaden your own horizons. However, I grow very nervous when I think that posting that 113 word rant about ultra-conservative politics is going to illustrate to the world that I am a moderate or a liberal (I will not say which I am). Having been raised in a home where political beliefs are not necessarily a matter to be discussed in polite conversation, I naturally hesitate to post that rant. Or, when I stop myself from a public feminist rampage when I read a status on Facebook that states women who pursue careers outside of raising a family are somehow further from God because they abandon their "God-given feminine" attributes in order to succeed in the business world. Aside from the hypocrisy of that response, the world would then see me for a raging atheist and feminist (which is not necessarily true).
Social media has given a voice to so many people out there who otherwise would be afraid to share those opinions and that is amazing. It has connected people across the nation and even across the globe in ways never before imagined, but is all this connectedness really a positive phenomenon? Is it actually "progress" that I now know an acquaintance of mine just had a massive argument with her boyfriend of two-minutes and is not sure if they are going to make it? Like any new technology, social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, and even Blogger and other blogging domains bring new ways of improving the world around us, but they also bring with a need for a redefinition of social interaction as we know it. New social guidelines and suggestions for polite web-based social interaction must be discovered and learned. Or maybe the world around me is just changing and I am the backwards one. Who knows?
Okay, maybe that did turn into a bit of a rant. However, I think that there is quite a feast for thought. And I also think that I certainly blog to my little hearts content while still maintaining a distinction between our "public lives" and our "Private Lives".
Thanks for sticking with me :) and tune in next time for a new recipe that I came up with on Sunday!

Change is the Only Constant
Oh, hello there! Long time no talk (post), what?
Anyway, I have a darn good reason for not keeping up to date this time - several darn good reasons!
And, well, that's all for now folks. Tune in next week for another installation of my ramblings (don't hold your breath for next week - at this rate I'll post again in June...)
Anyway, I have a darn good reason for not keeping up to date this time - several darn good reasons!
This is my You-better-accept-my-justification Face...
(I got a hair cut too...)
Reason #1: I GOT A NEW JOB!
I started working at NIU in the Office of Admissions at the end of February. I am an Office Support Specialist for the Transfer Center. I am starting out at the bottom of the totem pole, but I have so many opportunities to grow here. Bonus: I get my Master's degree for FREE!!!! The only question remains... What to get my Master's in? Any and all suggestions are welcome. The options are:
- M.A. in Public Administration
- M.A. in Political Science (pipe dream, I know)
- M.A. in History (even bigger pipe dream...)
- M.S. Ed in Higher Education Administration
Reason #2: TIM AND I MOVED!
We finally moved to Byron (did not make sense for both of us to commute to work), and our new apartment is just adorable! Here are some pictures that do not do it justice (also keep in mind, Tim and I are the worst unpackers - we've lived here for almost a month and still have tons of boxes)
| The kitchen, obviously |
The Coffee Station (although it looks awfully messy)
New Loveseat (and Tim)
The "Loo" as our friends across the Atlantic like to call it
Tim's Library (soon to be complete with a green banker's lamp)
And among other things...
I finally started working out again. Got my Byron Park District pass and I've been swimming or playing trying to play raquetball or walking the track almost every day. I've also been making healthier food choices (YAY).
Sabrina got KittyKaps

And, well, that's all for now folks. Tune in next week for another installation of my ramblings (don't hold your breath for next week - at this rate I'll post again in June...)

New Year, New Resolutions (to not keep...)
Happy Belated New Year dear readers (Elizabeth...)!
Now that the Holidays are all wrapped up (even if my Christmas Tree isn't - I hate saying goodbye to the holidays) it is time for me to focus on my New Years Resolutions. They are:
1. Be healthy!
2. Buy a house!
3. Start grad school classes
4. Quit drinking Diet Coke (maybe)
Well, there they are in all of their hopeful and shiny new year glory!
I want to elaborate on Being Healthy. The reason I chose that wording was because I'm not resolved to lose weight, or to eat all organic, or completely cut out a food, etc. I am aiming for all around health which, to me, includes regular exercise and a balanced diet. No fad/crash diets for this girl! I'm all about lifestyle changes - little ones - you know, the ones that are actually sustainable. Now, I do eventually want to start up P90X (great program, and I highly recommend it to anybody serious about their fitness) again, followed by a round of Insanity (another great program from BeachBody, but it is extremely intense. Insane, if you will) if my back can handle it. However, I know that this will have to wait until Speech season is over because, lets face it, it takes up a hefty chuck of time (bless their eloquent little hearts) and I'll never stick to the program.
I'll do my best to keep to them, but I like to take it one day at a time.
I will not beat myself up for skipping a workout.
I will not be ashamed of eating sweets or fast food in moderation!
I will not sink into depression if I do not have a house by December 31, 2013 - only if we missed out on the 'right' house.
I will probably not stop drinking Diet Coke...

When Husbands Cook Dinner :)
Last Saturday, my wonderful husband told me that I did not need to worry about dinner because he was going to be the chef for the night. He crafted the delicious O'Hana chicken wings with coriander dipping sauce. He found the recipe in the recipe book that Tim's mom and dad got us for our birthdays at Disney. It is favorite recipes from the Disney Chefs. They were mighty tasty.
However, joke is on Mr. Timothy because he did such a good job that now I'm going to expect him to cook for us more often :)
Not too much else is new with us. I had no Diet Coke for a whole week. We are cutting it out so that neither of us gets an ulcer before we are 30 years old. Drinking more water and milk and some juice instead. Hooray for healthier lifestyles!
In other news - I cut my bangs straight again. Huge change, I know.
Well that is all of the excitement in the Hanson household for now.
Sorry that its rotated, apparently I struggle with getting the right orientation in my pictures...

Budget time of year again...
All of this talk about national budgets and national debt has re-inspired Tim and I to focus more on our budget again. For the first few months that we lived together, Tim and I were very good about keeping track of all of our spending and logging it into an Exel Spreadsheet. We definitely fell off the wagon after Christmas though.
With the wedding out of the way and talk of house hunting in the future, we realized that we needed to get our own debt and budget under control again. When I say get our debt under control, I do not mean to say that we are drowning in credit card debt or anything of that nature. However, I did have quite a bit in student loans. For you nosy folks out there - I am not going to be putting exact numbers in here (I'm not one for sharing). We already have our debt under control - over half of my student loans have been paid off and the remainder will be paid off by July of 2013. The only other debt we are dealing with is a car payment that will also be finished in October of 2013.
Tonight I finished up the new Excel spreadsheet to figure out where all of our income goes every month and where we should be able to cut. Tim and I tend to over spend in entertainment (on video games, movies, books, etc) and on dining out (which we do on average 2 times a week, if not more). In order to get this in check, we will use a cash and envelope system for both dining out and for entertainment expenditures. At the beginning of each month we will place $100 dollars in 2 envelopes and that will be the money we can spend in each of those categories. Once it is gone, then it is gone. Whatever we do not spend can either be put back into savings or rolled over into the next month.
With the cut backs we should still be able to save some each month, and theoretically by the end of the next twelve months we will have enough put away for a down payment on a house! AAAAHHHH that is exciting stuff!
So, there it is the Hanson Budget plan :)
(P.S. we finally finished painting the trim in the bathroom :)

Fall Food Frenzy!!!
We are 3 months into Happily Ever After, and Tim and I have made some pretty exciting decisions.
First of all, we are starting to look at real estate in Byron :)
Second, Tim is going start his English Masters classes at NIU in the Spring. Yay for moving forward!
All that said, I've been obsessed with fall foods this weekend!
I started my day yesterday with a Pumpkin Spice Latte (yum yum yum), then my mom and I went up to Madison for the Farmer's Market and to do some shopping.
I bought butternut squash and acorn squash, so when I got home I made a loaf of butternut squash bread (recipe featured below - an original one this time :)
I am going to make some Butternut and Acorn Squash soup later this week (I'll post pictures and the recipe once I make it).
Mom and I also went to Penzey's Spices in Madison (great store) and stocked up on some spices. I found a recipe in their catalog for a Fall Food Skillet, which I made tonight - totally awesome!

(this is without brussels sprouts, gross.)
Chicken, Sweet Potato, and Apple Skillet
2 lbs boneless skinless Chicken breast, cut into cubes
1/2 tsp Poultry Seasoning
1/2 tsp Penzey's Mural of Flavor (combination of spices with citrus, garlic, and shallots)
8 tsp. olive oil, divided
6 slices bacon, cut into small pieces
3 cups Brussels Sprouts
2 medium sweet potatoes, microwaved or boiled for 4 minutes, then peeled and cubed
2 Golden Delicious apples, cored, peeled, and diced
8 cloves of garlic, diced (or 1.5 tsp Minced Garlic)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp cinnamon sugar
1/2 tsp Penzey's Northwoods Seasoning
2 cups chicken broth
Season the chicken with poultry seasoning and Mural of Flavor. Heat half of the oil in a large, deep, nonstick skillet. Add the chicken and cook over medium heat until lightly browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the chicken and transfer to a plate.
Put the remaining oild in the skillet, add the bacon and cook until it starts to brown, about 3 minutes. Add the Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes. Cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp, about 5-7 minutes.
Add the apples, garlic, cinnamon, cinnamon sugar, Northwoods Seasoning. Stir well and cook about 3 minutes.
Add half the chicken broth and cook until almost evaporated, about 2 minutes. Return the reserved chicken to the skillet and add the remainder of the broth.
Cook for 2 more minutes and serve.
Butternut Squash Bread
1 1/2 Eggs
1 Cup Sugar
1/2 Cup Oil
1 Cup Pureed Butternut Squash
1 1/2 Cups Flour
1/2 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Ginger
1/2 tsp Nutmeg
1/2 tsp Salt
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Beat eggs, sugar and oil together
Add squash and stir together
Sift in dry ingredients and stir well
Add vanilla and stir well
Pour into well greased bread pan
Bake at 325 degrees for about an hour
There you have it - the Fall Food Frenzy. Be prepared for more to come as this is my favorite time of year, not just because of the weather, but because of all of the great squash, sweet potato, apple, and pumpkin foods to eat!

Home Improvement – I’ve been watching too much HGTV
I have been lax in my posting lately (surprise surprise), but that is only because I’ve been working on a HUGE project. Over Labor Day weekend, Tim and I painted our bathroom and the columns in our living room – they both look fabulous!
I learned some valuable lessons from painting.
- Patience is a virtue
- Reward yourself
- Plan for extra coats
- Use a roller whenever possible
- If there is a bubble in the preexisting paint – Leave it Alone!
- Tape extra wide on the ceiling
I also learned that if Tim and I can work together and not get frustrated painting in such a small space then we can certainly handle just about any home improvement task you can throw our way! We’re awesome!
In other exciting news, I got to see one of my best friends whom I haven’t seen since the end of 2010 this week (she lives in North Dakota…) so that was also awesome. And we won some serious cash at Mystique Casino in Dubuque, IA on Saturday with Tim’s family (and by serious, I mean like $10). We bet on the dog races, and played some slots, and a couple rounds of roulette – awesome, had a wonderful dinner in Galena – awesome, and watched Citizen Kane – awesome?
I was going to post pictures, but they are on Tim's phone and I keep forgetting to ask... sorry folks.
